Beat the Heat with Art and Air Conditioning at Kunsthalle Praha

The summer sun is still blazing, and Kunsthalle Praha is buzzing with activity. We've got an exciting lineup, including major exhibitions like Lucia Moholy: Exposures and What We Should Have Said but Didn’t, along with Art 'n' Dine evening with Ester Geislerová, a lecture on mental health, guided tours, and much more. And don’t worry about the heat—we’ve got full air conditioning to keep you cool!

What’s in Store for You This Summer?

Don’t miss the Lucia Moholy: Exposures exhibition in Galleries 1 and 2. This is the first comprehensive retrospective of Prague-born photographer and publicist Lucia Moholy, covering her career from the 1920s to the 1970s. The exhibition features over 600 pieces, including photographs, letters, and audio recordings, many of which are on display for the first time. You’ll see her famous Bauhaus-era photos and lesser-known work in information science in Turkey and the art scene in Zurich. The exhibition also includes installations by Czech artist Jan Tichý.

In Gallery 3, explore the complexities of human relationships in What We Should Have Said but Didn’t by Ester Geislerová. This exhibition, presented through 10 short video installations, takes you through intimate conversations that never happened. Ester playfully blends elements of therapy, humor, acting skills from familiar faces, and unexpected twists. The exhibition runs until September 13th, with guided tours on the 8th and 11th—just register in advance.

On September 4th, we’ll open a pop-up video installation in the Booklounge called Nine Eyes of Google Street View. Artist Jon Rafman presents images captured by Google Street View cameras, collected since 2008. From countless seemingly neutral shots, he selected dozens of absurd, romantic, and otherwise remarkable images.

On September 6th, the city will slow down with graceful, deliberate movements. Three dancers, led by Eva Urbanová, will bring calm to Prague's bustling center with their Blue Movement performance.

For book lovers and those looking to escape the world for a bit, we’re hosting GOODGOOD x Kunsthalle Praha: Ambient READ on September 22nd. Enjoy quiet reading or relaxing with music in the gallery space. You can also engage in lively book discussions in our café afterward.

Events for Members

Of course, our exhibitions are accompanied by additional programs. We truly appreciate our loyal Kunsthalle members, which is why we’ve organized special events for them.

On September 18th, members can enhance their drawing skills. In various gallery spots and outdoor spaces, you’ll practice quick sketches of your surroundings. The urban sketching workshop will be led by Kunsthalle Praha member Rajesh Dhawan

The next member party, young members party, is for junior members (under 26) and will take place on September 20nd. We’ve prepared an exciting lineup: along with extended opening hours and a guided tour of the Lucia Moholy: Exposures exhibition, you can enjoy a program by Jan Bican, including a pop-up upcycling workshop and a live podcast My Kids from Station 2020 with Michaela Červená and Jakub Zeman.

The evening will continue with a DJ set by Lilith, drawing inspiration from the 90s hardcore scene, Y2K, and kawaii culture. The night will close with multi-talented artist Lajfr from Brno. Come and listen to songs from his latest album Party Never Ends or his viral hit OLA

Lectures

On September 1st, in the former bistro space, there will be a lecture by Petr Winkler, Director of the National Institute of Mental Health, focusing on how to manage mental health care in the school environment. This is not just for teachers and students—parents will benefit too! You’ll learn how to maintain your children’s well-being throughout the school year and start the year with ease.

A few days later, on September 4th, attendees can join an Art 'n' Dine event with one of the most prominent Czech personalities—actress, visual artist, and curator Ester Geislerová. Ester, known not only for her artistic work but also for her project "Therapy by Sharing," will share her views on contemporary art, relationships in the digital age, and her current exhibition project. The evening will be hosted by Kunsthalle Praha Director Ivana Goossen.

The program will also include an exclusive viewing of a work by German artist Katarina Grosse from our art collection. And to round out the evening, you’ll enjoy a buffet dinner and a welcome drink. On September 8th, take a journey through video art with the documentary VIVA VIDEO, VIDEO VIVA. Through archives, preserved diaries, and personal testimonies, the film presents the personalities who began using video as a tool for free artistic expression during the totalitarian regime in the mid-1980s. After the screening, there will be a discussion with the film's director Adéla Komrzý, along with Ester and Věra Geislerová.

Lucia Moholy, whose life you can explore in the Exposures exhibition currently on display, is inseparably linked with the legendary Bauhaus school. She lived with her husband in a house built in this style. How did such an environment influence her and her colleagues? This question and more will be answered by Dr. Robin Schuldenfrei, a professor at the Courtauld Institute of Art, University of London, in her lecture Lucia Moholy – At Home at the Bauhaus. The talk will be held on September 11th in English.

We’re serving soups and fresh sandwiches for lunch. You can also cool off with a wide range of lemonades, iced coffee, or chilled wine. And of course, the café offers an unbeatable view of Prague Castle.
